How do we quarantine?
The quarantine procedure includes careful observation of the fish (or groups) for the first few days, which are very critical. Observation includes monitoring their appetite, behavior (are they freely swimming or withdrawn?), and stress level (if their gills are opened/red, fins folded, etc.). If there's an individual that exhibit these bahaviors, we will proceed to isolating them and treating them. Most of the time, all it takes is for them to remain in a dark tank by themselves for a few days to fully recover. Sometimes, a little goes a long way.
Ok, so what medications do you use?
Typically, we try to avoid using medication and only uses it if absolutely necessary. There's no fancy salt/copper bath that we use when we receive our fishes simply because we get our stocks from very reliable sources.
For example, if there are signs of problems such as fungus, which typically shows up within the first 3 days, we will use medication such as rid-ich. If their flagellant is stringy white, we will typically treat them with internal parasite medication. Fortunately, we haven't had to treat any of our fish with any internal parasites (knock on wood!).
Rest assured that if we do not feel the condition of the fish is healthy enough or have fully recovered during their shipment, we will not sell them to our customers... period.
